Had to take a few weeks off for midterms, but I’m back now and just in time for SXSW. For the past week or so, Portugal. The Man had been teasing a new album and/or song via their Instagram account. The series of pictures each featured a magazine ad drawn over with the words “Evil Friends” scribbled within the ad. Yesterday, the Portland-by-way-of-Wasilla, AK band finally let us in on what exactly all the teasing had been leading up to: a confusing new song to accompany their upcoming album, Evil Friends. The song, which shares the album’s name, is quite the change of pace from a band that is always recreating their sound.
As many probably know, the album has been produced by, friend of The Black Keys, Danger Mouse and, unsurprisingly, the track sounds alot like recent TBK releases. As one of my favorite bands, Portugal. The Man has never disappointed me in the least bit. I always enjoy the new sound that accompanies their new albums, but this time I’m a little torn. I think the intro and chorus of “Evil Friends” are downright awesome, while the verses just seem like singer John Gourley is dubbing over some cut from El Camino. We’ll have to see where this goes, but it could lead to a bumpy transition. You can check out the video for the song below, and preorder the album, releasing on June 4, from iTunes.
